Haras de la Roussille

"A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse."

— William Shakespeare, Richard III

Welcome to the magical world of Pure Sang Falabella horses at Haras de la Roussille — a private breeding programme in South-West France dedicated to rarity, beauty, temperament and responsible legacy.

Introduction

A living legacy of Argentine equine artistry

The Falabella is not a pony. It is a true horse in miniature — the product of nearly two centuries of patient, deliberate selection from the estancias near Buenos Aires.

At Haras de la Roussille we carry that lineage forward in the Occitan hills: a small, carefully kept herd where each horse is known by name, and each foal is matched, never merely sold, to a single home.

Heritage

Thirteen generations, one unbroken line

  1. 01

    c. 1845 · Buenos Aires

On the fertile pampas near Buenos Aires, the Falabella family begins selecting the smallest, finest horses from their Criollo stock — a quiet experiment in miniaturisation that would take nearly two centuries to perfect.

  2. 02

    13 generations of selection

Through thirteen generations, size was reduced and refinement increased — never at the cost of bone, temperament, or true equine character. The result is a horse that is fully a horse, only in miniature.

  3. 03

    A 25-year companion

Falabellas are exceptionally long-lived, often surpassing twenty-five years. A placement is therefore a long commitment, not a purchase — which is why we match each foal to a home, rather than sell to the first bidder.

From the Argentine pampas to the Occitan hills, the programme continues under a single principle: quality over quantity, always. Our herd is small by design.

Our Breeding Programme

Breeding Excellence

"Preserving rarity. Breeding excellence. Honouring heritage."

We are committed to maintaining the unique characteristics that have made the Pure Sang Falabella one of the rarest and most admired equine breeds in the world: harmonious proportions, refined elegance, intelligence, gentleness, and soundness.

Every mating is thoughtfully planned to preserve genetic diversity, strengthen bloodlines, and ensure the birth of healthy, well-balanced foals capable of becoming exceptional companions, ambassadors, and future breeding animals.

Our horses are raised in the ancient land of the Cathars, in the South-West of France, where they benefit from spacious pastures, attentive daily care, social interaction, and an environment that encourages both physical and emotional well-being. At Haras de La Roussille, our horses are first and foremost our friends. They are cherished members of our daily lives, and each one is respected as an individual with its own unique personality and story. We do not simply breed horses; we safeguard a rare equestrian heritage and prepare each new generation to carry this legacy into the future.

Our Breeding Objectives

  • Preserve authentic Pure Sang Falabella bloodlines.
  • Produce horses with correct and harmonious conformation.
  • Prioritise excellent health, longevity, and soundness.
  • Select for gentle, intelligent, and human-oriented temperaments.
  • Maintain and enhance the beauty and elegance of the breed.
  • Promote responsible and carefully considered future placements.
  • Contribute to the preservation of one of the world's rarest equine breeds.

Breeding Programme

Foals expected in 2027

We anticipate a small number of foals in 2027 from our foundation mares Solita and Valegra. Placement is selective: each foal is matched to the best-suited home, not the first to enquire.

Placement is not first-come, first-served. We prioritise the welfare and lifelong suitability of each horse above all else.
